Who we are
Soul imagination is a social enterprise dedicated to inspiring young people from
all walks of life to develop a powerful 'creative imagination' to create new
realities for themselves, for others, and for the earth.
We partner with writers, artists, inventors, entrepreneurs, musicians and
healers as well as community groups and civic organizations to empower young
people:
- To walk their own path
- To understand their inherent connection to all living beings and to the
earth
- To respect all forms of life
We do this through the UNIVERSAL SOUL program.

Soul
Imagination was founded by Dr Desirée C. T. Cox in 2005. Dr Cox has worked as a
medical doctor, a professional historian of medicine, a jazz-singer, writer and
visionary artist/painter.
Born in a poor inner-city area of Nassau, Bahamas, Desirée studied science at
McGill University (Montreal, Canada) where she specialized in Quantum chemistry,
receiving a BSc. (Hon) in Chemistry in 1986. In 1987 Desirée went to Oxford
University where she studied medicine as a Rhodes Scholar.
After qualifying as a medical doctor she obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
and a
PhD in History of Medicine from Cambridge University of Cambridge. Desirée
worked as a medical doctor in London for a number of years before moving to The
Bahamas where she served as consultant and advisor to the Prime Minister of The
Bahamas in the area of Human Development and Urban Renewal between 2004 and
2007.
Now focusing exclusively on her creative talents, Dr Desiree Cox is now a
full-time visionary artist/painter, writer, independent consultant in Human
Development and social entrepreneur. One of Desirée's creative
innovations is of bringing together art and live music performance in the public
spaces of hospitals to transform depressing hospital spaces into healing spaces
lead to her being described as a 'Renaissance Woman' by the British Medical
Journal (BMJ) in 2004. She is an Associate Lecturer to University of the West
Indies in Ethics and Humanities and an international key-note speaker. Dr
Desirée Cox is also one of the co-founders of the 2002 Urban Renewal Initiative
of The Bahamas.
A 'true-true' colorist, Desirée's paintings are uniquely exotic, mystical and
poetic. Her subject? The soul. Working mainly with oils, she aims in her
canvases to explore the dimensions between 'real' and 'unreal'. Her brush
strokes create a sense of movement and rhythm. Art critics and
commentators have described her canvases as 'blazing', 'arresting', 'spiritual',
'surreal', 'soothing' and 'soulful'. Her 'color families' - the combinations of
colors she brings together – draw from the Bahamian 'Junkanoo' music and art
form and they strike an inner chord of the human soul. Since 2004 she has lived
in The Bahamas.
She divides her time between Nassau (Bahamas) and the UK (her home for 16 years
over). She has held a number of exhibitions in The Bahamas. Her work is held in
private collections, homes and offices in the Bahamas. An exhibition of her work
will be at London's Studio 47 gallery in 2008. She has released 2 Jazz
CD's (2005 and 2007). Her first work of fiction 'Edge of the Sea' will be
published in 2008.
